Downsizing Tips
Although the idea of downsizing your home may seem overwhelming at first, there are things you can do to make the process much more manageable.
First things first. Starting your downsizing – which may be more aptly referred to as decluttering or rightsizing – as early as possible can eliminate a great deal of stress. Spreading out the process over the course of a few months is far less daunting than trying to do everything at once at “go time”.
Then, get organized. Start by making a list of items you are certain you no longer need. You will also need a plan for ridding yourself of unwanted items. To keep things simple, place them into categories:
- Things to throw away
- Items to donate
- Everything you want to set aside for a yard sale, should you decide to go that route
Next, just take things bite by bite, going room by room. You don’t have to go
gangbusters and accomplish everything at once. The hardest thing is often just taking that first step. Sometimes it is easiest to start the downsizing process by going through your clothes and donating anything that you haven’t worn in a year. Once you begin, it’s all in!
Keep in mind – and this may sound like common sense, but…try not to begin
accumulating items for your new home too soon. Waiting to buy things like furniture will suit you well. By the way, don’t forget to measure furniture before making your purchase so that you can be certain it will fit perfectly within your beautiful, new home.
